Ellen Page walks into the production office for her new movie, Whip It!, in Saline, Michigan on Wednesday.
Also spotted on set was Drew Barrymore, who’s directing and starring in the comedy. It’s her directorial debut!
Whip It! was written by Shauna Cross, based on her novel “Derby Girl”.
In the film, Ellen, 21, plays misfit girl Bliss, who is constantly being pressured to enter beauty pageants by her mother (Marcia Gay Harden). Bliis then joins a roller derby league, stumbles over reality and eventually finds herself along the way.

Call it intuition, or skill, or just good luck, but Canadian filmmaker Bruce McDonald found Ellen Page for his film the Tracey Fragments just before the movie Juno rocketed her into Oscar territory and Hollywood stardom.
“I had never seen her in anything until I saw her in the Tracey Fragments, really,” McDonald tells Sun Media, just as his film makes its DVD debut this week.
“What I saw in her was the excitement that she was creating around her in the projects she was coming off then. We met as she was coming off X-Men and Hard Candy.”
McDonald felt the electric charge. Other people he respected were raving about her performances. So he met her, liked her and cast her in the Tracey Fragments as a 15-year-old Winnipeg teen going through a coming-of-age crisis. There was no audition.
“She looked great. She loved the material. She was smart. She had just turned 18 when we started this project. So it was just one of those things. Obviously, she knew what she was doing and I didn’t need to audition her. She had been doing this for a while and she had gotten great references from people I greatly admire. Then it was amazing to watch. So, yeah, we were lucky.” Continue Reading »
That’s a big star-in-the-making for William Morris to lose to Endeavor, especially after Ellen Page’s Oscar nomination for Juno, since WMA decided at a retreat a few years ago to focus on building the careers of talent because it was too tough to take stars from other agencies. So here’s the backstory I’m hearing: Hollywood is whispering that Kelly Bush, Ellen’s publicist turned manager of the last few months, moved her. So now a half-dozen talent agencies around town are whining why they didn’t get a meeting. Because there were no meetings. I hear Bush tried hard to keep Page at William Morris, where the publicist also has several clients including Josh Brolin. But this was Ellen’s decision. “She just never made a connection even though Morris has represented her since Hard Candy at Sundance.” But Ellen felt an instant connection with Endeavor’s Patrick Whitesell. “Very much so. It was just organic and not premeditated. She didn’t take meetings around town.”

Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig, Juliette Lewis and Zoe Bell are mixing it up with Ellen Page and Drew Barrymore in the roller ring.
Barrymore will play Page’s teammate in Mandate Pictures’ roller derby comedy “Whip it!” then skate behind the camera between takes to make her feature directorial debut.
Harden plays an overbearing ex-beauty queen who would rather see her daughter, Bliss (Page), in pageants than skates. Wiig (”Saturday Night Live”) plays Bliss’ rowdy mentor, Malice in Wonderland. Lewis is Dinah Might, the star of Austin’s top team. Bell plays a medical technician moonlighting as derby star Bloody Holly.
The film begins shooting this summer in Michigan and Texas.
Harden is repped by CAA and Framework Entertainment. Wiig is repped by UTA and Odenkirk Talent Management. Lewis is repped by Don Buchwald and Associates, and Bell is repped by CAA and Drama 3/4.
